      Very good breakfast

Have provisions for children e.g. children's menu but could look into children's cutlery. When able, an refurbishment and update would be nice (in comparison with Edinburgh Marriott - November 2008)

      Position of hotel,friendly,helpful efficient staff.

Hotel is looking dated and sad.I know the hotel from it's pre Marriott days.In dire need of a revamp, shabby paintwork, dirty carpets. The formerly vibrant piano bar now resembles a retirement home.

The staff at the hotel were great! As we were checking in we were given a complimentary glass of wine and offered some Victoria sponge cake. The room was lovely with a king size bed. We ordered breakfast in bed the next day and it was gorgeous. The late 12pm check out was a bonus.

I had actually booked a river view room which we didn't get it was over looking the car park. I didn't want to complain at the time as it was for my hubbys birthday so I mentioned it when checking out. The staff were very nice about it and said they didn't receive that information whether this is true or not I don't know but they gave us 20 off for the night - nice touch.

The staff were very considerate and friendly. The food was great.

The heating was overpowering on the hottest few days of the year, with the radiators and towel rails all turned on. To be honest this spoilt our stay. It was uncomfortable and unpleasant and no air conditioning was available.

      Excellent location and friendly staff.

Air conditioning in room a bit noisy and not easy to regulate temperature. Food in restaurant average.

We stayed at this hotel as a birthday treat. The hotel is very central to all the Durham sights. The rooms were clean and comfortable. All staff were very friendly and courteous. The spa was lovely. We spent a very relaxing time there! We would definitely return.

The location and the service were excellent

The hotel in parts needed decorating/minor improvements

We thought we had lost our bottle of wine. We had a bottle brought up to our room, free of charge. On our return home we found our bottle in the Hall! Many thanks for a superb stay.

everyone was very helpful, cheerful, courtous, and the food was very good. room was good size very clean and of a high standard.

    • Couple

I had possibly the worst nights sleep in a very long time and being 8 months pregnant that is something I can't afford to lose. The staff were very slow leaving me standing in the bar waiting to be served for almost 20 minutes despite it not being busy without so much as acknowledging me. The room was very dusty, I would say it hadn't been dusted for 2-3 weeks. The bed was extremely uncomfortable and our room was not ready when we arrived and when we did check in some time later it was very close to the lift meaning this was all I could hear all night. That dnd a lot of shouting and screaming from other guests which should have been solved by hotel staff. Ultimately I will not stay here again.

Very nice hotel with a good selection for breakfast. Good location 2 mins from shops and castle.

    • Group of friends
      9.6

friendly staff on reception and in the dining room free upgrade to a double double with a lovely view of the castle and cathedral bedroom decor

the lift needs a bit of tlc - it's shabby and worn compared to the rest of the hotel
