Overview

Deans Place Hotel is perfectly situated on the banks of the Cuckmere River at the foot of the South Downs National Park. It is surrounded by the stunning scenery of the Cuckmere Valley, as well as Drusillas Zoo Park, the Lewes Brewery and Beachy Head, with its dramatic white cliffs, are short drive away. In addition, the Alfriston parish church, the Alfriston Clergy House, St Andrew's Church, the birthplace of the Steamer Trading Cookshop and the Alfriston Festival.

The private 3-star venue is housed in the 14th century vast Sussex farming estate, established in 20th century.

Each of our 36 individually styled bedrooms has satellite TV and a DVD player, tea and coffee making facilities, direct dial telephone and bathrooms stocked with luxury toiletries, complimentary Wi-Fi connection throughout the whole hotel. Our idyllic Sussex position offers exhilarating contrasts: the bustle of a village high street, dinner alfresco on a Summer's evening, afternoon tea in a Victorian garden or supper before a crackling log fire. We also offer exquisite weddings, well organized conferences and a diary full of events. You are offered a restaurant set in four acres of well-maintained gardens and open meadows, serving a range of creatively-designed traditional English dishes. The property has all the facilities for a perfect break - a bar, lounge, an outdoor heated swimming pool, croquet, boules, a putting green and a large terrace for alfresco dining during the summer months.

      The meals

The bedroom was getting tired - paintwork around windows; difficult to open and shut; mucky tiles in bathroom; tiny dressing table.

      Pleasant Staff and surroundings

Disappointed with the Dinner menu. The 5 choices for each course were the same for each of the three days of our stay. The only changes were in the Chef's recommendations, which were not always acceptable. Was told that they only change the menu monthly, which for a 4* hotel is not acceptable. a wider choice must be available.

Quiet place; Medieval village very nice

I had thought from the hotel's website that our room would overlook the gardens, but our view was that of the car park. The room was noisy, with a large fan immediately outside the window, which didn't shut properly. However as it was late when we arrived we didn't feel like making a fuss and asking to change rooms. Although a firm bed is good for the back this one was so hard that I woke in pain in the middle of the night and had bad backache the next two days. The cooked breakfast was pre-cooked, with over- salted bacon, eggs and mushrooms, the dining room dark and oppressive, overlooking the car park. Altogether overpriced for what it offers.

Very relaxed, friendly atmosphere.Very welcoming and very happy to be able to have my dog with me, since so few hotels are truly at ease with dogs.

My room had a very noisy air conditioning unit outside. This kept me awake during the night.I complained to the reception who apologized profusely and made a deduction to my bill.

Good location, nice decor and welcoming and well trained staff.

Dinner menu limited and overpriced. Did not see anyone eating in the restaurant both evenings of my stay.

Being accompanied by a dog it was the ideal venue. Both of us warmly welcomed. The staff were delightful and the accommodation was ideal. The Hotel is situated in an idyllic place just out of the village and right on the river bank. I will definately be back.

The food was just above ok but not great. But I am a good cook and hypercrtical. Also I was in catering and know how difficult it is to maintain excellent food when you are busy one night and dead the next. And I didn't eat in the dining room only breakfast and bar meals.

The location and the bedroom which was delightful, whilst small with a four poster bed. The dinner menu was good and whilst not the best we tasted on our holiday certainly passed the test for enjoyment and quality.

The toast! It seems a daft thing to say but you can judge the quality of a hotel by its toast. The toast was lifeless and limp. Attention to such details is critical in the kitchen if the food is to live up to the overall quality of the hotel.

The whole ambience of the hotel. The organisation was absolutely seam less with friendly, helpful and very efficient staff.

Liked the grounds, bar and reception area.

Felt it was very overpriced at £140 for a sunday night b & b. We had a tiny very rundown bedroom with a dreadful bathroom which had black grouting and a useless shower curtain which didnt eveen reach the bath it was so short! The hotel didnt advise us there was a wedding in the hotel and put us in a room where wedding reception was going on outside our bedroom window - not a relaxing experience. Surely, it would have been better to put one of the wedding guests in that room? Had dinner (only two tables). Had to request an aperitif (not offered), plates cold, food indiferrent. All in all very disappointing.

We were there for Glyndebourne. Location was wonderful, rooms lovely and the staff so helpful and friendly. Alfriston was a lovely place to walk around and the owner of the hotel suggested so many things to do. Will certainly go back.,
